Cursed Shipwreck Yields Treasure and Human Remains | National Geographic

2736 ratings | 664098 views
For 450 years, no one knew where the Swedish warship Mars, named for the Roman god of war, sank in the Baltic Sea. The largest vessel of its time went down in a fierce battle in 1564 with more than 800 people aboard. Its discovery in 2011 yielded an astonishingly well-preserved ship, including the seamen who went down with it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. the Baltic sea is great for preserving ships. I wonder if warships of this age have been declared graves for the seamen and soldiers who were on this vessel?

A short segment on a great shipwreck lost at sea. Very cool!
Smug Smugly (3 months ago)
This ship was not designed for a simple Caribbean cruise ship. That is not what it was built for. Many American wealthy and movie stars of it's day rode on her. It's like the QM-1 OE-1 and the Normandy. These were called "Ocean Liners" because they were built to cross the Atlantic Ocean and withstand the gigantic rogue waves that will swamp any of these new Carrabin tall cruise ships. When the first time the SS United States sailed the Atlantic to England it was faster than the "Cunard's Queen Ocean crossing liners" and won the title and trophy.

Right remind you though the fact is they didn't disturb the bodies they didn't take stuff off the bodies because there is no body finding a coin on a pole is not grave robbing, they have permission to do this they know more then you do so next time stop saying stupid things, which person back then owned a cannon they never ended up getting payed so thee not grave robbing there doing there job finding the truth as to what happened.

Yea Sure We would really love to thank Exxon Mobile for Researching Alternative fuel's for when we run out of cheap easy & NOT to get oil . It's really encouraging to see that they are spending but a drop in the bucket for research compared to the Massive quarterly Super Hyper windfall in profit's that have been price gouged out of the working people pocket's since the 2000 Bush election that clearly signaled the end of Government interference in the price per gallon because it was on that day that the price doubled and WE the people NEVER heard a word mentioned in the News Or spoken of in Government again .. You might have noticed how many time's The Clinton Administration stepped in to STOP the insane price per gallon increases the greedy NO GOOD Douche Bags in the Petroleum cartel wanted every single time there was a storm Or civil war anywhere oil was evacuated from .... But just imagine the mental impact on people when any company reports 100 straight quarterly Mega profits of say more than 50 Billion dollars .. Now either they have priced themselves into Nirvana or what ? You tell Me ? How is that possible ????

what makes this wreck and you different than the Titanic I mean by bringing up artifacts every time you hear about Titanic you hear it's a grave site it should be left alone I'm just curious what makes the difference?
Northern Witch (2 months ago)
Ok, you might lable me a conspiracy theorist but I think it's about legal, not moral reasons. A few people are convinced the ship that went down was not the Titanic but her sister ship. Rumors continue to say the coal was burning in the coal bin and that's why it went so fast. There is so much I cant do it justice by a few thoughts but reading up on this rumor is very intriguing. Addressing your point then is I think they dont want people poking around to discover secrets that sunk the Titanic.
patrick robinson (2 months ago)
Stephen Kimbell (7 months ago)
da'dub archeology is basically digging up graves to learn about the world the people lived in.
Cold Beer (8 months ago)
We have to preserve some of the history.
Eastern Explorer (1 year ago)
The difference is the age of it. The titanic sank in 1912. The last survivor of the titanic died in 2009. This ship sank 450 years ago. I'm pretty sure nobody is left alive to care lol

No wonder he was after that ship , a ton of money involved
Rick Autry (2 years ago)
I guess they just should have kept their mouths shut about all of those silver coins, with that number available, they just ripped the market out from underneath them! The value is only valid for an obscure, hard to find item - not one with thousands to choose from! I don't know how the law works where the ship sits, but I'm sure that the government wants the biggest cut...

It was a warship. International law says that it still belongs to the nation that sent it out, along with all its contents.
Volcano Cafe (2 years ago)
What you overlook is that Mars lies within Swedish territorial waters and thus the wreck and everything associated with it belongs to the Swedish state. The chance that even one of those coins makes its way onto the open market is vanishingly low...

Yeah, the baltic is amazing in that way aswell, its too cold for wood eating parasites and since its so deep where the wreck is, it hasnt been effected by waves either, quite remarkable.

Steelgreyeyes (1 year ago)
Coins recovered from a shipwreck often have a value multiplier.  Take that into account, deduct the fact that a huge new supply becomes available and the value may move only slightly up or down.  As always the condition of the coins will become the real way values are determined after the above factors are determined.

someone out there is thinking I just wasted 13000 euros....
Ron Helton (4 years ago)
One silver coin is valued at 13,000 Euros.  But there are 220,000 of them according to the records. Well, if they recover all 220,000, then that "quite a heap" will be reduced in value because they will no longer be as rare.
Sniff (2 years ago)
Yes the value will not be the same if they find 220 000 of them, however it will still be fucking expensive to buy one of those lol xd
caveman Versace (3 years ago)
+Ron Helton The coins will always be valuable as they offer insight into the time periods civilisation.  Lots of gold bullion is found from all different time periods, the gold itself actually becomes less valuable than the historical story behind the gold itself.

I told a person once that I was an offshore (that is, an ocean) sailor. She said "Oh I could never do that". My reply was, "And so you never will". My advice to you Kris is to decide what is REALLY important to you. Then you must make a plan on how to to do it. if you don't do that you are likely to look back on your life with regret. I'm serious, put down that damned computer and get planning!
